Before setting off on my return journey to the Middle Kingdom, or what it is also known as: rice country, I’d like to pay tribute to one great man and his ingenious feat: Friedrich der Grosse, Koening von Preussen.
Whilst visiting Berlin, I also went on a short trip to Potsdam to see ‘Sanssouci’. Built in 1745-47 it must be one of the most magnificent places built by the prussian king as a summer palace, where legend has it he said: ‘Quand je suis la, je suis sans sousis’. Anyway, his big achievement, among other things, was to introduce German farmers to the potato, a vegetable that I will very much miss in China. Friedrich himself was also fascinated by many things Chinese, manifested by the chinese tea house he had built in his palace gardens (second picture).
