a much more pressing and indeed interesting question is: how many polystyrene boxes can you get onto a chinese tricycle? And no, it’s not one of those jokes … You say 3? Perhaps 5? Pah – amateurs!

On yet another weekend trip to Shanghai, yes I do still love it, I finally had a camera on me to take a picture of what can only be seen in China: someone taking maximum advantage of a vehicle and overloading it with all sorts of stuff … and by stuff I mean polystyrene boxes, chairs, scrap, metal, paper, flowers … you name it, I’ve seen it crammed onto the back of a bike. And so, finally, here comes the proof: in Shanghai, if you know what you’re doing and you have a tricycle you can get HUNDREDS of boxes to fit on its back, sides and front.

Reports of such sightings are scattered all over the blog, but you must understand how happy I was when I finally managed to take a picture of one. Also found out that this is the ‘delivery tricycle’ for the local fish market … so all the boxes were full of raw fish waiting to be unpacked and sold on the market … yum! So if you’re thinking of getting a new car because the old one is just that little bit too small … consider getting a chinese tricycle! You’d be surprised as to how spacious they are.
