Not being able to break with tradition, I have to provide a brief report on this year’s mooncakes – seen as today is mooncake day and all! This time it’s not the ones that we were given to by the university – I gave those away, but the ones that I was given to by some students. Very sweet of them, thank you!
Anyway, as always you start with a massive box and hundreds of layers of wrapping (including several layers of plastic!!! looking forward to environmentally friendly mooncakes next year, or alternatively biodegradable wrapping) … the bigger the gift the better the kudos … so I guess size does matter! Then, inside, mooncakes stenciled with cute little tiger heads. In the hope that I would not find raw egg, as we did last year, I cut open the bottom row and to my surprise the inside of the mooncakes consists of chocolate, bean paste and what looks like marzipan … have not quite dared tucking into them yet, so, for now, it’s something that looks like marzipan, but could very well be something else. Bottom line: a good year for mooncake!
As for mooncake day itself – it’s quite a miserable day with quite a bit of rain and overcast skies, but considering the temperatures and levels of humidity that we’ve been having lately … it’s actually a relief! Happy Mooncake Day!
