Finally made it to Ningbo
So finally made it to Ningbo. Took roughly 3 and a bit ish hours in the car from Shanghai – which is quite quick. Stopped off at the Metro on the way to the University to get some essential supplies. Turned around the corner and there it was: a life-size, spitting image recreation of the Nottingham University Trent building. Talk about international branding or what? I will upload some pictures as soon as I have had the chance to take my camera on a tour around campus.
Spent some of yesterday walking around Ningbo. It’s quite different to Shanghai of course, although the constant bombardment of advertising and noise has managed to follow me. Saw this gigantic billboard at the top of a building, right by an intersection, running full adverts for aftershave, mobile phones, etc. Wish I had had my camera with me to show you. Next time! I was happy to see that the ornamental cabbage planting has also followed and I saw a magnificent Magnolia grandiflora alley which, I am sure, will look great when the blossoms are sometime in the next 4 weeks. Am really looking forward to the eruption of blooms in spring – the campus is really nicely planted up, so it will make for a great place to investigate more of the vegetation.
Will probably spend most of tomorrow being introduced to the University. With Chinese Lunar New Year most staff are only back tomorrow and so I’m assuming that all the admin will happen then. Hopefully I should get my office and various other essentials. Was told yesterday that the government decided to change all the national holidays for this year (at the end of December) and so I need to make sure that all my teaching materials are all correct before I can take them to be printed. As you can see: China is just that little bit more eccentric than your average western country.
