Shanghai is so multifaceted that every time I go and spend time there, I discover new and exciting things; so before flying out to Frankfurt from Pudong for a new year break, I spent a long weekend in Shanghai.

It is almost a year since I first explored Shanghai and so much has changed: we are approaching the year of the cow, Jing An Temple has a new main building, M&S has opened on Nanjing Lu with mild success, the Jing Mao tower is no longer the highest building in the city (more on that later) … development in this city is simply unstoppable …

Still my favourite temple in Shanghai and possibly in China (well …) Jing An temple is a haven for peace and tranquility within a world city, but also a great place to do people watching and getting a feeling for the new years celebrations that are about to explode all over the country. We spent about half an hour observing, even joining in with people throwing coins into the main ‘donation column’ … I believe the higher one manages to throw the coin into the column, the better your luck … I managed level one, but then I throw like a girl. Launce managed the top …! Even the children were joining in, though their target was more the base of the column than the openings higher up.

One last comment: Chinese New Year seems to be particular time for chinese couples to get engaged … an assumption based on the fact that every year around this time, Tiffany & Co have a huge big advert overshadowing the temple complex …
