or ‘The Bottle Opener‘ as I like to call it. With Launce having a soft spot for tall buildings, I got my arm twisted to go and see what Shanghai from the top of an almost 500m tall building looks like. Little did I know that our journey would take us on a time travel, using a psychedelic elevator, make us see the floor of an alien space ship and then finally take us to a replica of Hugo Drax’s Moonraker space station.

For any person with a delicate disposition: do not attempt this on your own … it’s so out of this world that it stopped making sense to us as soon as we went through the ticket barriers … I won’t give any more away … go an do it if you have the spare time!

Needless to say that, if the air had not been dirty and polluted, and had the sun been out more, the views would have been breathtaking. Admittedly the 97th floor (pictured above) was better than the 100th floor, which features a glass floor (why? have you gone completely mad? What if the glass breaks? And no, I do not suffer from vertigo … much). In true Chinese tourism style the whole experience is delicately planned out with a mandatory light show at the beginning including strobe lighting, an oversized digital floor counter on the roof to the elevator entrance to show you how brave you are being and a trip through the overpriced and hideous souvenir shop to remind you of your space travels. The uniforms of the staff are space-gray with a purple scarf … out of this world, I tell you … it was great fun. Despite all the excitement and scary heights though: we still prefer the Jing Mao tower, mainly because of its more inspirational architecture.

The glass floor won’t break. I won’t be a glass geek and explain why. 😉
