Following the old cliche: Ningbo is a little bit like a box of chocolates … you never quite know what you will find when a) you open your curtains in the morning and b) when you leave campus.

But before we leave campus to report back on several new and exciting finds, let me share with you a picture of camps that I took not too long ago. The reason for me sharing this and being excited about it is because: there are individually visible clouds as opposed to a gray layer of cloud and dust, and there is sky behind them … blue sky!!! … and for the first time since being here I was able to see a mountain range that stretches behind the buildings in the background. I have reported many times before (here and here) on the mountains that I can see from my office window but had never realised they stretch all the way to the other side of town. Oh I miss the blue sky!

As for the rest of Ningbo … going out with friends last night I discovered a new restaurant. Food wise it’s not for the faint hearted or for vegetarians: duck tongues, deep friend snake, various jelly like creatures from the sea or wherever they happen to grow, meat galore and generally things that look like they have been eaten once before and re-served on a platter or a carved out papaya … hey but the peanuts were good! Clearly Chinese haute cuisine is completely lost on me. Apart from the food however – well I suppose it’s the main reason one goes to a restaurant, but apart from that … the place was gorgeous … a bit boudoir, but really fancy.

After dinner we went to Ningbo Grand Theatre to watch some jazz. I had seen the guys before, when I was up in Shanghai in January, in a bar by the Bund, so no surprises there – excellent again! As for jazz in Ningbo – somehow the two don’t quite go together. I can’t really describe it but for some reason the fun and joy of jazz is better to be enjoyed in Shanghai …
